Pio XII Museum

(museum tactile tour - Roman collection)

The Pio XII museum was founded in 1957 by Luciano Afonso dos Santos Canon, in the Santiago seminar facilities. It began as a Museum of Archaeology. Then they went gathering other collections (sculpture, painting, textiles, jewelery, liturgical ornaments, coins ...). The spaces for the museum were tight. The collections were poorly packed, the building did not provide the required conditions such as maintenance and security. One part of the estate was showing signs of these unsuitable circumstances. Where the museum was installed, there was one medieval tower, part oh the medieval wall, which still remain and had inspired security to the city of the Archbishops during centuries. In 1984, the painter Henrique Medina, famous landscape and portrait painter above all, natural of Esposende, donated to Braga archdiocese 52 paintings and 21 drawings. Between the end of the XX century and the beginning of the XXI century, the seminary was completely refurbished. For the Museum was designed an entire wing, properly insulated.

Sé of Braga Cathedral

The building rests on the foundations of an old market or Roman temple dedicated to Isis. The Cathedral of Santa Maria Braga, Portugal’s mother of devotion to the Virgin, is regarded as a center for episcopal irradiation and one of the most important temples of the Portuguese Romanesque. Its history dates back to the work of the first bishop, D. Pedro de Braga, corresponding to the restoration of the Episcopal Cathedral in 1070, which did not retain traces. The Cathedral of Braga is an extraordinary example of the religious heritage of the city. Here gather many chapels and tombs of several personalities who were part of the history of Braga and Portugal. In this cathedral are the tombs of Henrique de Borgonha and his wife, Teresa of León, the earls of Portucalense County, parents of D. Afonso Henriques.
